Two-Eyed Seeing in Fisheries

Alaska Chapter of the American Fisheries Society
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee
Seward, AK, March 2024

Envisaged by Mi’kmaw Elder Dr. Albert Marshall, Two-Eyed Seeing is “learning to see from one eye with the strengths of indigenous knowledges and ways of knowing, and from the other eye with the strengths of mainstream knowledges and ways of knowing, and to use both these eyes together, for the benefit of all.”

In the spirit of of Two-Eyed Seeing, the Chugach Regional Resources Commission and the DEI committee of the Alaska Chapter of AFS hosted a 9-hour, cross-cultural communications workshop for indigenous fisheries experts, fisheries researchers, and fishery managers. I was invited to the event as a visual storyteller.

Collective Alaska Native Perspectives

Quliyanguarpet - Our Story
Seward, AK, September 2023

The Chugach Regional Resources Commission “developed this series to build an understanding of Alaska Native true history, legal complexities, diverse cultural practices, and the way of life from the perspective of Alaska Native People. Participants […]
explore[d] opportunities to learn from other cultures and share experiences through panel participation with Alaska Native Elders and an all-Native Mentor panel.”

As a graduate student with the Northern Gulf of Alaska Long Term Ecological Research (NGA LTER) program, I had the honor of attending this three day learning workshop.
